Vocabulary: what is actually tested

We went through the PSLE vocabulary questions — both the multiple-choice section and the cloze. The finding is not the one most revision lists assume.

The short version. Vocabulary barely repeats. The overwhelming majority of words tested appear once and never again, so memorising long lists has a poor hit rate.

What does repeat is a type of word. Of the small group that comes back, most are precise adverbs of manner. That is the pattern worth working on.

The words that do come back

Of the small group that recurs, most describe how something is done. Examiners use them to separate pupils who know a word roughly from those who know it precisely.

Why lists disappoint, and what works instead

A child who memorises a long list meets almost none of it in the paper. The questions are not built from a fixed list; they are built from shades of meaning.

Learn words in pairs that nearly overlap. Hastily and promptly both mean quickly — one is careless, the other is prompt. That distinction is the question.
Learn the adverb with its verb. Nonchalantly shrugged, warily approached, meticulously arranged. The pairing is what makes it stick.
Read the whole sentence before the options. Vocabulary cloze answers are decided by context, not by which word looks most impressive.
Collect words from reading, not lists. A word met in a story is remembered; a word met in a column is not.

How to actually get better at this

Vocabulary is the one section where reading beats revising. But the exam rewards a narrow skill — telling apart two words that nearly mean the same thing — and that only sharpens with practice.

Put near-synonyms side by side and ask which fits and why. Hastily or promptly. Confident or compliant. The reasoning is the lesson.
