Grammar MCQ: which points actually come up

We went through the PSLE grammar multiple-choice questions and sorted them by the grammar point each one tests. The spread is far less even than most revision books suggest.

The short version. Grammar MCQ is 10 questions worth 1 mark each, at the very start of Booklet A.

Nearly a third of all questions test tenses and verb forms — three times more than the next point. Prepositions, subject–verb agreement and quantifiers follow. Everything else is a long tail.

The four that carry the section

1. Tenses and verb forms — about a third of questions

The clue is almost always a time marker elsewhere in the sentence. Since and for pull the present perfect; a finished past action takes the simple past.

Thomas and Jake are good friends. They __________ each other since kindergarten.

(1) knew
(2) has known
(3) had known
(4) have known

“Since kindergarten” runs from the past up to now, so the present perfect is the only fit. “Has known” fails because the subject is plural.

2. Prepositions — one in ten

These cannot be reasoned out; they are fixed by the word that comes before. Keen on, good at, interested in — they have to be learnt as pairs.

It had never occurred to Betty that she would be keen __________ art classes.

3. Subject–verb agreement — about one in eleven

The trap is a phrase between the subject and the verb. Cover it, and the right answer is obvious.

All the toys in this shop __________ stolen last week.

(1) is
(2) are
(3) was
(4) were

The subject is “all the toys”, not “this shop”. Plural, and “last week” makes it past.

4. Quantifiers and determiners

Little and few mean almost none; a little and a few mean some. One word changes the meaning entirely.

Being irresponsible, the brothers gave __________ consideration about the consequences of their actions.

(1) any
(2) little
(3) some
(4) much

Where the marks are lost

Reading past the time marker. Since, for, ago, by the time each force a particular tense.
Agreeing with the nearest noun instead of the real subject.
Guessing prepositions. They follow no rule — they are learnt.
Question tags. A negative word such as hardly or seldom already makes the sentence negative, so the tag stays positive.
Answering too fast. One mark each, ten marks total — the same weight as the whole synthesis section.

How to actually get better at this

Knowing the pattern is not the same as being able to do it under time pressure. The section rewards automaticity, and automaticity only comes from repetition.

Work one pattern at a time until it stops needing thought, then move to the next. Mixed practice tests what a child knows; single-pattern practice is what teaches it.
